After having recently posted my daily workout routine, I received lots of questions on workout alternatives.  Some great questions were raised.  The most commonly asked question was:  “Is P90X good enough to get me in shape for hunting out West?”
The answer is a resounding YES….if you’re disciplined.
Not everyone has the luxury of having a weight room in their home.  My wife and I have worked out for decades, and wanted to make a weight room part of our house.  This is nice because the gym is only a few steps from our home office, which saves us time.  But I recognize that’s not a possible setup for everyone…nor is there always time to get to the gym every day.
I’m a firm believer in lifting weights to build and maintain overall strength.  If you can get to the gym and lift weights three days a week, that’s great.  Combine this with a cardio workout (running, biking, etc.) on the off-days, and you’re on the right track.
Enter P90X.  If looking to burn calories, build overall body strength, tone muscles and get a solid cardio workout, P90X is it.  I’m not paid a dime to endorse the program, but I’ve gone through it twice, and love it.
What I like most is the fast-pace action of P90Xwhich keeps you moving, meaning there’s no down-time.  Second, I like the fact that even while lifting weights and exercising, your heart rate routinely climbs to 160 and 170 during a number of the workouts.  Third, I like the fact it incorporates weights.  Even if you can invest in only a few dumbbells, it’s worth it.  There’s no substitute for pumping iron, and recent studies show this is one of the best things for the body, especially aging generations.
One summer I devoted 90 days to P90X.  That fall, when climbing steep, rugged, high-elevation country on back-to-back elk hunts, I felt I was in some of the best shape of my life.  In fact, I like this program so much, I incorporate it at least 3x a week into my regular weight lifting workouts (usually workout 2x/day on those days).
If you stick to the program, not only will you notice improvement in strength and muscle tone, but come hunting season your level of stamina will amaze you.  Your mental strength also shoots up.  If you dedicate yourself to the program, yes, P90X works…it’s the real deal!
