“Dad, how long’s it been since you’ve made a blog post?” quizzed my oldest son.

“Uh…wow, a long time,” I hesitated.

“Yeah, 9 months,” he reminded me.

While I love my job of hunting and fishing, finding time to share the adventures in every medium available these days, isn’t easy. In an effort to improve getting information out there–the real reason I do what I do–I know making consistent posts are something I need to improve upon.

Our speaking and seminar schedule was crazy from January through May, this year, traveling to the east coast multiple times, and driving to different states throughout the West. We’ve also been developing a new website geared toward sharing information on hunting, fishing, cooking, destination adventures, and more. Stay tuned, as I’ve not seen anything quite like this site, one we hope to launch early this fall. Oh, I also wrote a book on clam digging for a publisher and have written over 75 magazine articles this year, on top of the more than 60 seminars I gave.

Yes, life is busy, and there are only so many hours in the day. But, I was able to get out fishing a good bit this spring and summer.

Screen Shot 2015-08-08 at 8.50.12 AMEarly in the spring I hooked up with Austin Moser (www.austinsnorthwestadventuresllc.com) on a springer fishing trip to the lower Columbia River. We caught an above average number of chinook compared to boats around us. What impressed me most about Austin was his attention to detail and how he did things differently than others around us. While most boats were anchored, Austin worked the tides and trolled, covering a lot of water. The vividly brined herring he used, thanks to some of Pro-Cure’s finest dyes, made a big difference, I feel.Screen Shot 2015-08-08 at 8.52.05 AM

A couple months later we were with Austin in central Washington, going after walleye, perch and springers. I caught my first walleye, ever, with Austin, but Tiffany still reminds me how she caught walleye before I did, and how hersScreen Shot 2015-08-08 at 8.56.27 AM were bigger! Jarod Higginbotham, from Yakima Bait Company, also joined us, and taught me a lot about walleye and perch fishing. We all fished the Icicle River for springers, too, where we all came away with new knowledge and some great eating fish.

Screen Shot 2015-08-08 at 8.51.07 AMThe family made it to Oregon’s Odell Lake a couple times this spring. The first trip was with a high school buddy, Terry Walters, and his brother, Scott, who are dialed-in to jigging for kokanee. In just over three hours of fishing, our boat landed 145 kokanee. A couple months later we were back, trolling with my buddy Dave Jones, and his friend, Julie Collis. We saw loads of action and came away with more great eating kokanee, some of our favorite. Dave has started guiding kokanee trips on Odell Lake, and is based out of Eugene (541-915-5710).Screen Shot 2015-08-08 at 8.54.33 AM

The family had a chance to fish sturgeon on the Columbia River with ourScreen Shot 2015-08-08 at 8.55.30 AM good friend, Jody Smith (www.jodysmithguideservice.com, 541-643-6258). It was the boys’ first sturgeon trip, and they fought fish for four hours straight; they were sore the next day! Good buddy, Paul Atkins, from Alaska, joined us on the trip, and caught and released loads of sturgeon, including one over 8’ which is a nice sturgeon for shallow water fishing Astoria waters. Paul also enjoyed some fun trout fishing near our home, on the McKenzie River.

I recently fished smallmouth bass with Jody Smith, near his home in Elkton, OR, on the Umpqua River. I love fishing in the evenings, and over the course of three hours, Jody and I landed over 100 bass. We fished five differentScreen Shot 2015-08-08 at 9.10.38 AM methods, all of which we filmed, and the topwater action was nonstop, as was the action on plastic worms and Yakima Bait’s new Rooster Tail Minnow. It was a fun, relaxing way to spend the afternoon.

The best part, on all of these trips we filmed numerous segments which will debut on our new website, soon! You’ll also be reading about some of these adventures in magazines next spring and summer…Stay tuned!
