The year started off great with multiple winter steelhead trips taking place with the whole family.  We all caught fish and put some great eating meat in the freezer.
Sportshow season was a long one, with Tiffany and I each delivering over 60 seminars in multiple states across the country.  We love speaking and meeting people; I guess that’s the teacher in us.
The spring hunting season was better than I’d dreamed it would be.  The first hunt of the year found the whole family in Florida, chasing hogs.  Everyone got in on the action, hunting by way of spot-&-stalk, from treestands and off swamp buggies…everyone liked the swamp buggies, best!KazHog13.2.11  Kazden took the prettiest hog I’ve ever seen, with an AR, and I was fortunate to take my first Osceola turkey.  Good friend, Rick Hollenback, is to thank for helping us make this family hunting adventure one we’ll never forget.  SHosc13.16
Bird2Next, it was off to Mexico’s Yucatan region, targeting ocellated turkeys.  Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d have the opportunity to pursue these grand birds.  I was fortunate to take two gorgeous turkeys; one in the jungle, one in agricultural lands.  I’ve been a bird nut since boyhood, and these are some of the most striking creatures I’ve seen anywhere in the world.  I wish every turkey hunter had the chance to see these beautiful birds, up close.  A bonus on this trip was taking a record-class gray brocket deer via spot-&-stalk, and new camera man Ty Cary did a great job catching it all on film.  Only a few of these hunts have ever been captured on film, and of the more than 70 hunters in camp over the season, we were one of two who filled a brocket tag.

Idaho was good to us again, where I ended up taking my 50th bear, a gorgeous cinnamon, boar.  Now I can get to work on writing that bear book, Western Black Bear Hunting…it’s one of my New Year’s resolutions!  SHID5.13.1 (lr)The highlight of this trip was being joined by wounded Veteran, Orlando Gill, who took his first bear.  In early fall we were back in Idaho, again with Matt Craig of www.bouldercreekoutfitters.com.  This time we had guests from Sweden, Norway and the U.S., and three men took their first bears, all with hounds.  I love hound hunting, and look forward to taking one of the boys on this hunt, soon!DVDshot
Then it was off to Australia, where I was joined by a trio of Trijicon employees, as well as good friend and ace camera man, Dave Arabia.  Dave and I first filmed together nearly 10 years ago, when I served as host of Adventures Abroad and Salmon, Trout, Steelhead, both shows of which ran on the Outdoor Channel.  Recently, Dave is known for the outstanding work he’s been doing in filming the Mountain Men series.  In all, we came away with six episodes for Trijicon’s The Hunt, taking rusa and fallow deer, water buffalo, red stag and an animal that’s eluded me in three previous attempts in Australia, a prized scrub bull.  ScottBuffI had a monster water buffalo at full-draw twice, but couldn’t get a clear shot, but was able to eventually arrow a good bull.  We made some great friends on this trip, and you can bet we’ll return to hunt with Peter Edser of www.highcountrysafaris.com.au.Scrubber
Soon, Ty and I were off to Africa.  We were back in Zimbabwe hunting in one of my favorite places on the planet with Jonathan Collett of www.touchafricasafaris.com. The family hunted here a few years prior, but this time I went, solo, with leopard and Cape buffalo topping the wish-list.  Before, I’d taken a dandy buffalo bull, but this time we were targeting an old cow, something Jonathan takes a certain number of each year as part of the region’s herd management efforts.  The hunt took five full days, and ended with our running into the middle of a herd in thick brush, only to have an enraged cow come right at us.  The shot came inside 15 yards, and fortunately the buff’ dropped on the spot.  We also took my best kudu ever, a massive horned bull with horns curling to the upper 50” mark…he was excellent eating, like all kudu.  Wildebeest, impala, zebra and a dandy klipspringer were also taken, but the highlight of the trip–and my career–was taking a magnificent leopard.  Gathering baits and strategically hunting these cats was one of the most amazing events I’ve ever been a part of.  Jonathan has many cats in this area (we saw three in daylight hours).  We’re already planning our next trip to Jonathan’s, one of my favorite people to hunt and spend time with.

For the first time in 13 years I didn’t hunt elk, as Africa, then a subsequent trip to Alaska, ate-up all of September and part of October.  I drew a prized moose tag for the Arctic region, north of Kotzebue, a place where some of Alaska’s biggest moose have come in recent years.  On this hunt I was joined by fellow outdoor writer, Paul Atkins, who lives and teaches in Kotzebue.  Nearly 20 years had passed since I’d seen Kotz’ and it was surprising how much it had grown.  In addition to hunting, I was excited to speak in several classrooms at the high school, and see former colleagues I’d not seen since leaving our teaching jobs in Alaska in the late 1990s.  I love the Arctic–it’s one of my favorite places–so harsh, desolate and demanding, but stunning in so many ways.GrizGrp
Paul also had a moose tag as well as a grizzly tag.  Though we failed to find any big bulls, Paul did take a gorgeous grizzly, which we ate in camp; he’s also having it mounted lifesize.  We did encounter plane problems when relocating camp in an effort to find moose.  Our plane engine blew up, we made an emergency landing moments before dark and just like that, our moose hunt was over.  We were fortunate to walk away from that hunt.  The moose and grizzly hunts will be the first shows to air in our 2014 season, so you’ll have to tune in then to catch all the details.
M&BRoosyKill13.1(lr)Back home, Braxton filmed one of his classmates and good friends, Macie Stewart, taking a 5-point Roosevelt elk. It was another season highlight, being able to catch a youth, young lady, on film going after these grand animals of the Pacific NW.
Macie and her dad, Chris, also joined our family on an antelope hunt in Wyoming.  My dad, Jerry Haugen, was also on this hunt, where six of us took six bucks while coming away with two TV shows.  We hunted with Jon Ball, of Kids TiffAnt13.1(lr)www.jonsoutdoors.com.  If you’ve never hunted pronghorns, this is one of the most family-friendly hunts I know of, and there are always leftover tags in this part of north-central Wyoming.
Then it was home, where we spent the next month chasing one of our favorite big game animals on earth, the Columbia blacktail deer.  Since the release of my popular book, Trophy Blacktails: The Science Of The Hunt, it’s humbling how much I continue to learn about these, what I consider to be the toughest trophy-class animal to consistently attain in North America.
Braxton and I were up first, looking to tag bucks with our new long-range setup.  For this hunt we headed to southern Oregon, where the country is open and the weather nice during blacktail season (equates to better filming opportunities).  This was the first time we hunted with Mike Lee of www.southernoregonblacktails.com.  I’ve heard Mike’s name for quite a while, as he’s dialed-in to taking big blacktails each year; he also knows way more about long-range shooting than I do.  We used a .338 Edge built by master gunsmith, Curt Mendenhall, of Sutherlin, OR, and topped it with Trijicon’s new long-range scope, their TARS (Tactical Advanced Rifle Scope).Brax4x4
This setup shot impressively well and Braxton and I devoted many hours of practice to this new style of shooting.  Braxton scored on a dandy 4×4 at 430 yards.  I was next, taking out the heart of a buck at 960 yards.  The challenges of long-range hunting are addicting, precise and took our shooting knowledge to a level we’ve never known.  We look forward to doing more long-range hunting in the future.Scott'sBuck
Kazden took part in Oregon’s Mentored Youth Program, looking to take his first blacktail with a muzzleloader.  We hunted all but two days of the season, each day after school and on weekends.  We had one nice 4-point inside 50 yards one evening, but it was too brushy and too low of light to clearly pick up the buck in the iron sights, so Kazden chose not to shoot–I was proud of him for not forcing it.  He could have shot a spike and several does, but he held out in hopes of finding a mature buck.  Unfortunately, he never fired a shot, but we had a great time, together.
THbtail13.1(lr)Tiffany also held out for a big buck in the late archery season, and her patience paid off.  She was able to arrow a heavy-racked 4×4 inside 25 yards.
WSmaglip The year ended with more great winter steelhead fishing and bird hunting.  We spent many days with good friend and one of my favorite people on the planet, Jody Smith (www.jodysmithguideservice.com), where the family hunted ducks, geese caught steelhead and even took a big turkey right after Christmas.  We hunted two days for turkeys, and finally intercepted their path of travel, lowering the boom on a tom sporting a 10 3/4” beard.  It was a great way to end the year, and catching that hunt on film for our TV show was a special bonus.
You’ll be able to watch most of these hunts starting in July, when our new season of Trijicon’s The Hunt returns to the Sportsman Channel.  With our new camera man, Ty Cary and editor, Jason Williams, we’re creating the best quality shows I’ve been associated with. Be sure and check this website, Facebook and Twitter for TV updates, hunting, fishing and speaking reports.
Get out there, have fun and enjoy all of what our great world of hunting, fishing and living off the land have to offer.  Hope to see ya on the road!
